I have a backlog of unpublished photos, including this gem from a prolific trip I took to Europe in 2018. On this same trip, I took a lot of favorites including several from Paris and a panorama of Stockholm. However, a folder of images remained untouched. Finally, I revisited them, and this one stood out. But where was it taken?
Six years is a long time, and my memory of this specific spot was hazy. Luckily, I’ve been geotagging my photos for years, making it easy to recall such details. Back then, I used a separate GPS device to export location data and import it into Lightroom. As long as your camera’s time settings are accurate, this method works like a charm.
According to the data, this photo was taken in Ramsvik, Sweden. I remember visiting Sweden with Gwen after a work trip and exploring the coastline north of Gothenburg, and we must have stopped in Ramsvik for the night. The only other memory I have is of an epic sunset, with a long, colorful denouement that transitioned into a beautiful blue hour.
So, take photos, but also keep good records. Moments are fleeting, and so are the details in our memories. Thanks to GPS data, I was able to pinpoint this location on a map instead of leaving it as a mystery.
